Lunch meeting was held at KS on the Keys      Scribe: Rosemary Parker

Announcements
  • Rosemary gave an update on backpacks: Two hundred backpacks were filled last Friday at The Salvation Army. Joan, Gary, Peter, Evette, Janine, Rosemary and Captain Jeff were very efficient in filling the bags. Rosemary started distributing the bags on Tuesday and there were a lot of happy parents and kids. Moe and Rosemary will deliver 30 bags to Banff/Ledbury Community Centre.

  • Moe suggested we donate $500 to Education Foundation in appreciation for the backpacks. Alex will discuss this suggestion with the board.

  • Alex presented club executive pins to Joan, Sam and himself. (see photo)

  • The car show will take place on Saturday, 31 August 2019 at Wesley Clover Park. We are still looking for volunteers.
  • The Ottawa West Rotary Club has asked for assistance in delivering ‘mums’. This is a fundraiser they have been involved in for a number of years. It’s an opportunity for our club to raise some funds as well. Alex will send out a form and if you are interested in participating, be in touch with Alex. The dates for this event are October 2, 3, 4, and 5.

  • The District Conference will take place on Nov. 1-2, 2019 in New York State. All members are invited to attend. The cost for the weekend is US$325.00 which includes accommodation for two nights in a beautiful hotel, conference fees and meals.

  • No meeting next week, 28 August 2019.

50/50 Draw - Happy Bucks
Sam happily took our happy bucks and he did double duty by drawing the 50/50 Number. Moe’s number was drawn but unfortunately, he did not find the joker.

Backpacks to School 2019!
Rotary Club of Ottawa South provides backpacks filled with school supplies for local students.
Rotary Club of Ottawa South members Rosemary Parker and Mahamud (Moe) Elmi took charge of our annual backpack program. Each year we source new backpacks and fill them with some school supplies for local students who are in need of some of the fundamentals to a good education.

The backpacks are given to deserving families by the Salvation Army Citadel location, as well as the Banff Community House. Traditionally we provide around 80 backpacks, but this year Moe and Rosemary raised the bar much higher.  Moe is a Sergeant with the Ottawa Police Force and works with some of the local schools, which has helped him develop relevant contacts. He was able to get 200 backpacks, each with some school supplies, free from ‎Clarissa Arthur, Executive Director of Education Foundation of Ottawa.

Our budgeted funds were used to add more supplies to each backpack, making this a banner year backpack program, and 200 young students. Extending our funds even further, Rosemary met with the manager of Staples at South Keys and she received great discounts on new school supplies.

Two hundred backpacks were filled last Friday at The Salvation Army. Joan Hunter, Gary Pluim, Peter Pauker and his better half Evette, Jeanine Parker, Rosemary Parker and Captain Jeff Arkell from the Salvation Army were very efficient in filling the bags.In addition to the school supplies, each backpack had a hand-written positive/motivational statement (complete with stickers!). Rosemary started distributing the bags on Tuesday and there were a lot of happy parents and kids. Moe and Rosemary delivered 30 bags to Banff Community Centre.
