  • Sherri reported that Environment committee meetings resume this Thursday at 7pm (they will be held bi-weekly). The committee has been prioritizing items; they will focus on youth engagement via social media, gathering more info on cookstoves and tree planting initiatives, using the website and social media to foster greater awareness and engagement in environmental issues.
  • Kateri reported that the Board is reviewing the Membership strategic plan and it will then be open for club discussion, adoption and implementation.
  • President Dave announced that he, Chris and Joan will meet with the Hunt Club Golf Club to get the ball rolling for our golf tournament.
  • Happy Bucks brought stories of COVID coping, infection and better health, and wishes for good health to all.

DAVE'S ROTARY MOMENT

Preamble to the Four-Way Test

The preamble of the Four-Way Test is “Of the things, we think, say, or do…” This preamble provides context. Without it, it’s not quite clear what is supposed to be the Truth, Fair, Beneficial, etc.

It’s no accident that Herbert Taylor used these exact words in the preamble. The world may never know what you’re thinking. But thoughts get converted to words. And words get converted to deeds.

The preamble reminds us of the importance of following the Four-Way Test at each of these stages. Many clubs don’t recite the preamble. Maybe it’s because they’re reciting it at the end of the meeting and they’re anxious to ring the bell and leave. So they recite, but they don’t reflect. Imagine a visitor to your club hearing you recite the Four-Way Test. Without the preamble to give it context, the Four-Way Test loses much of its impact, especially to someone who may be hearing it for the first time. Rotarians are admired throughout the world because we try to live up to the Four-Way Test. I hope the next time you recite it, you will find deeper meaning and greater inspiration in its words.

Scott Vetter brought members up-to-date on developments regarding a revised website for Rotary Ottawa South. Much useful discussion regarding beneficial improvements, types of content and photos and use of social media.
Members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa South discuss upcoming activities, fundraisers and improving their website.
