KATERI'S ROTARY MOMENT

Hope

Today, at the start of a new calendar year, I want us to reflect on hope and what Rotary brings into our lives, communities and world.

Paul Harris once wrote: “These are mighty days, days of incomparable opportunity — of opportunity undreamed. Off with the useless old, on with the useful new. There will never be a better chance than now. Humanity must rise triumphant from this vale of sorrow, ennobled by its suffering.”

This kind of hope requires us to focus on the positive and that’s very hard. It’s a discipline. But we have all that we need to practice hope – we have science, technology, vaccines, significant public and political will, and, most importantly for us, our Rotary values and principles as well as the things that make Rotary possible — networks, fellowship, friendship, understanding, tolerance, confidence and, above all, serving others in our work. We just need to use what we have.

Our biggest enemy is our own sense of helplessness and hopelessness. If we love and care about each other and our fellow human beings, then something is required of us, other than turning away. We cannot do nothing and expect change to happen – we are going to have to change to make sure that the world can change. People who make the optimistic choice – not to deny the problems but to believe they can be fixed – make the world better. Therefore, during these dark days, let us focus on living our hope and with it all of the good things that can and are happening in our own lives, in Rotary, at our club and in our community.

What You Should Know About Registered Disability Saving Plans

Jeff Sirrs, Financial Advisor, Canada Life

As an RCOS member and experienced financial advisor, Jeff was happy to inform us of the little known benefits of a Registered Disability Saving Plans (RDSP).

FYI, Canada was the first country to have such a plan, and it was introduced in 2008.

But the facts get much more interesting; anyone who qualifies for a disability tax credit qualifies for a RDSP.

Some other key takeaways are:
  • It's not just for youth, adult can also benefit
  • anyone can contribute (not just a family member)
  • the government will kick in as much as $90,000
  • do I really need to add another point here?

RCOS Environmental Committee Enviro Tip
Keeping Our Water Clean, David Oliver

Canada and its abundant fresh water; Have you ever seen a river that has been abused?

Canada has much of our world’s clean water, but much of it is remote We need to protect and respect our rivers that nourish our bodies and our souls.

  • Don’t pour toxic household chemicals, used oil or antifreeze, or paints down the drain or in the street. Older anti-rot treatments were full of arsenic and later copper. Take them to a hazardous waste center.
  • Do not over apply fertilizers. Consider using organic or slow release fertilizers instead.
  • Pharmaceuticals are surprisingly pernicious and dangerous for fish and other wildlife in our rivers and lakes Bad enough that we excrete a percentage of every pill we take. But never throw pills in the toilet. Return unneeded pharmaceuticals to the drugstore.

Be active:

  • Join or participate in Ottawa Riverkeeper, whose goal is to have a swimmable, drinkable, fishable Ottawa River watershed for everyone.
  • Take part in local clean-up days to help keep trash out of the water. Clean up litter along a river, stream or beach, or along city streets or highways.
  • Support our Rotary cleanup activities.

Let’s plan for our children and grandchildren to drink the water a hundred years from now!
