The Rotary Club of Ottawa South continues to participate in the Dictionaries4Life program, with Charles H. Hulse P.S.
Our Community Services Chair, Moe Elmi, led this project, which RCOS has been involved with for many years. The Dictionary4Life (D4L) project is a free-standing project working in association with the Rotary Club of Battersea, Brixton and Clapham , Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland, and Usborne Publishing Ltd. They produce a beautifully illustrated, hard-cover British/English dictionary targeted to Grade 3 students.

The 288-page dictionary comprises 1,000 illustrations, 10,000 entries and 20,000 definitions printed in full colour on leaflet grade paper from a sustainable forest. It has a user’s guide, parts of speech, writing English hints, English Today and a history of our language and recommended websites. It weighs over a kilogram, so it’s truly a well-laden resource!

This past Tuesday morning, Moe, along with fellow Rotarians Alex Davidson and Gary Pluim, visited Charles H. Hulse public school in Ottawa with several boxes of new dictionaries. They met with a Grade 3 class in the gymnasium and handed each student a dictionary, taking time to look through the resource book and chat with the students. Many of the students attending Charles H. Hulse school are new Canadians and were thrilled to receive the gift. They were very excited to receive such a large and colourful tome, and to write their names on the nameplate page at the front of the book.

Our club members had a wonderful time meeting and chatting with the students and staff at Charles H. Hulse. The Rotary Club of Ottawa South is excited to support the D4L program and literacy,. Moe would like to thank Dina Talhouk, the school's Vice-Principal, for her assistance in organizing the get-together.
