The International Committee is directly engaged with overseas Rotary clubs and other partners to assist in international development and undertake sustainable rebuilding following times of devastation. This often means visiting the country to plan, and to help implement projects. In recent years RCOS has been directly supported:
- The building of a school in rural Ghana as part of a larger community mobilization project.
- Support (with the Rotary Club of Dominica) for Campbell Primary School, located near the west coast village of Mahaut. Campbell Primary suffered major damage and loss of resources following the flooding and mud slides that hit Dominica in 2016. The school is now repaired, and new resources have been obtained, including computers and re-stocking the library.
- RCOS worked with the Rotary Club of Orleans to raise $30,000 in support of schools throughout Dominica as they recover from the widespread devastation of Hurricane Maria.
- We are working with an organization founded by one of our members. The Somali Hope Foundation ensures that all girls and boys in the village of Bursalah – Puntland, Somalia are provided with high quality education in well resourced, safe schools.
As well as direct involvement, RCOS also supports other organizations undertaking sound international development work. For instance, we have provided financial support for:
- WaterAid’s “Clean Water for Schools” project that has provided access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene education to over 120,00 students in 170 schools
- A project that assists children in the schools of Nairobi’s Kibera Shanty town
- A project (with the Ottawa West Rotary Club) to provide assistance for people with disabilities living in the Kasese District of western Uganda
- Somali Hope Foundation which built and runs a school for girls and boys, and the community, in Puntland, Somalia
